A Must Watch: Rak of Aegis

When we first heard of this Comedy- Musical coming up we (Me and my Office mates) immediately inquired about their ticket sales and available slots. We were quite stunned that most shows were already fully booked and sold out so we ended up purchasing a ticket dated at August 23, 2014 at 8pm on a Saturday night at the PETA theater.

Aegis songs which were comprised of an all female group became popular in the 90’s.  Their songs were all about unrequited love, broken hearts and dreams which were shattered in the process.  (A tad melodramatic it seems right? ).  Their powerful vocals which resonated throughout the stage whenever they perform are something to really look forward to. So we just couldn’t contain our excitement when we heard that these songs from the powerful all girl group rock band were being made into a comedy musical play. We were eager to see how everything would eventually come into play and pan out.

The plot of the story is set in Villa Venizia (a pun on the canal city of Venice), a small community that has been submerged in flood for almost two months due to the construction of an exclusive subdivision which entailed some bribery and some under the table negotiations with the contractors and some politicians. The Main Character Aileen tries to lift up their family from poverty since their main livelihood (shoe making) had been compromised brought about by their town being submerged into the deep flood waters. She tries to upload a video of herself via. You tube with the help of her friends and lovers along the way paving the way for her to be eventually discovered by Ellen Degeneres and cast into stardom.

A series of witty banters and powerful vocals as they try to depict their sentiments about the status quo ensues along the course of the play. Their lines, customized lyrics of the Aegis songs and live interactions with the audience kept us at the edge of our seats throughout the whole course of the play. We were laughing along with the whole audience as we marveled how the love story of Tolits- Kenny and Aileen all come into play.  It very well portrayed the resilience of the Filipino spirit in the face of poverty, natural calamity and how resourceful we are as a nation that despite these predicaments hurled at us we still manage to smile, sing some tunes and display being one with our community for the benefit of everyone.

This was really a fun experience worth noting and watching. I wasn’t really a fan of Fiipino theater and musicals until I watched this one and it definitely got me hooked. Kudos to the cast! Great job everyone!
